Edinburgh based and freelance for six years, Andy works in oil paint and pen and ink for companies including Games Workshop, Titan Publishing, Wizards of the Coast and DeAgostini/Lucasfilm's STAR WARS Fact Files. Among his many commissions are book jackets, comics and story illustrations. Andy likes to work with a rich historical theme and much of his work is medieval in context.

In the preliminary sketch, Shiv has frilled cuffs and rather roughly cut hair, neither of which quite suit his character in the Tales. You'll also see the background is only sketched in, as at this stage, defining the characters is the most important thing.

Shiv becomes one of Livak's closest friends over the five Tales despite being the wizard who blackmailed her into joining his quest in the first place. He is seeking out ancient artifacts that may solve a particular mystery puzzling the Archmage Planir. As Shiv travels in the wider world of Einarinn rather than staying on the cloistered island of wizardry that is Hadrumal, he becomes increasingly independent in outlook. With the answers to mysteries from the past throwing new light on the present role and nature of magic by the Fifth Tale, The Assassin's Edge, Shiv begins to see a new path for himself and like-minded mages.
